Life History Evolution with Antagonistic Pleiotropy and Overlapping Generations
نویسنده
چکیده
Previous results found for selection with antagonistic pleiotropy and discrete generations are extended to cases with overlapping generations. In order to do so, protected polymorphism conditions are found for monoecious and dioecious populations when the intrinsic rate of increase, or Malthusian parameter, is not too large in magnitude. Under such conditions, it is shown that recessive deleterious gene effects foster the maintenance of allelic variants affecting life history. The significance of this result for experimental studies of the evolution of senescence is addressed.

Evolution of late-life mortality in Drosophila melanogaster.
Aging appears to cease at late ages, when mortality rates roughly plateau in large-scale demographic studies. This anomalous plateau in late-life mortality has been explained theoretically in two ways: (1) as a strictly demographic result of heterogeneity in life-long robustness between individuals within cohorts, and (2) as an evolutionary result of the plateau in the force of natural selectio...
متن کاملMultiple Genetic Mechanisms for the Evolution of Senescence in Drosophila Melanogaster.
We present the results of selection experiments designed to distinguish between antagonistic pleiotropy and mutation accumulation, two mechanisms for the evolution of senescence. Reverse selection for early-life fitness was applied to laboratory populations of Drosophila melanogaster that had been previously selected for late-life fitness. These populations also exhibited reduced early-age fema...
متن کاملGenetic Constraints to Life-history Evolution in the Pitcher-plant Mosquito, Wyeomyia Smithii.
Life-history theory relies heavily on the hypothesis that genetic tradeoffs among the components of fitness constrain their independent evolution and joint maximization. Herein we show that selection on preadult development time in the pitcher-plant mosquito, Wyeomyia smithii, leads to a correlated response in cohort mean generation time but no correlated response in survivorship, fecundity, or...
متن کاملExperimental evolution reveals antagonistic pleiotropy in reproductive timing but not life span in Caenorhabditis elegans.
Many mutations that dramatically extend life span in model organisms come with substantial fitness costs. Although these genetic manipulations provide valuable insight into molecular modulators of life span, it is currently unclear whether life-span extension is unavoidably linked to fitness costs. To examine this relationship, we evolved a genetically heterogeneous population of Caenorhabditis...
متن کاملEvolution of thermal dependence of growth rate of Escherichia coli populations during 20,000 generations in a constant environment.
Twelve experimental populations of the bacterium Escherichia coli evolved for 20,000 generations in a defined medium at 37 degrees C. We measured their maximum growth rates across a broad range of temperatures and at several evolutionary time points to quantify the extent to which they became thermal specialists with diminished performance at other temperatures. We also sought to determine whet...
